Once Upon a Time, My Trainer is Leaving……

I’m so freaking mad right now. So, been here for over a month and I’m being transferred to the other half of Kansas to have a different dad (trainer). Elder Nix is going to be a zone leader and I’m being trained by Elder Limb, who was AP when I got here. So, all of my sick people on date are going to get 2 completely new to the area missionaries who barely know what’s happening. I literally don’t want this to happen. I want to stay in Goodland. But, since I don’t want to fight God’s decision on where I go, I’m going forward in faith.
I finally got to meet Brandon this week. He fell off date because he was busy and wasn’t home when we stopped by, but I got to meet him. He is super stoked and is getting baptized this week. We discovered something startling. Brandon and I are halves of the same person. All things that I like are everything he likes. We are mentally bonded, and he is my homie. Also I met Lesley, someone who lives in Goodland. She was an old investigator who is now on date for baptism. Too bad I’m not going to be around for any of their baptismos!!! Aaaaaaaaaaaggggghhhhhhhh!!!
Just letting you know I am going to Topeka. It sounds awesome, and I’m excited, but I feel like my work here isn’t even close to being done. So many of the people here make me feel welcomed and one of them. Plus, I’m in a time zone I was used to beforehand. Now I have to time travel an hour into the future to go to Topeka.
So, eventually, I’ll show all of you city slickers what prison cake is. I’m going to make a video tutorial with my iPad and send it to all the missionaries and friends and familia. Missionaries are going to love it, because the total cost to make prison cake is about $4.25. And it’s so good and caffeinated. Also I am going to work on a district song for transfers. 4 out of 6 missionaries in the district are leaving and one area is being shut down. They are white washing the area. Elder Nix and I will go to Hamm for our remaining time together.

I’ve had to rely on my savior more and more and more as my mission steadily progresses. I’m becoming even more lovingly bold with everyone so they can partake of the blessings of God. I literally cannot express my love for Kansas, the people, the mission and, most importantly, my savior. It’s inhuman how much I want to give to these people. My heart breaks to think I’m being separated from these people, but I’m going forward in faith. Super proud of all of my best friends, those I met before my mission rebirth and during, who serve in as foreign place as I do, at least mentally and those are about to leave to serve our God and those who couldn’t or don’t have the opportunity anymore. All of you shaped me into a man I am not ashamed to be, and I love you, my brothers. I’m super proud of my familia, who would have probably been better without me, but stuck by me, and I love them for all they do. All of them are acting like my savior did for me. All of you are acting like my savior, loving me, encouraging me and calling me out when I’m being stupid (which happens a lot) I love my mother who has borne me, both in a physical sense, but, more importantly, in a spiritual sense. I love the father who has taught me, not only to be a man, but to be a man of God, who is sanctified in all he does, thinks and says. Love my grandparents, mission prez, bishop, everyone, because you taught me. I thank those who always write me on pday, whose words I’ll always cherish, adore, love and honor. All is inspiration to the soul.

I want to thank the best for last. I love my savior. When alone, he comforts me. When tired, he strengthens me. When I am unworthy, he makes me whole. I’m nothing without him. I’m saved through my brother, who is the Christ. He paid for me, so I’ll spend the rest of eternity to save those like he saved me. I have to pack up and say good bye to all these sick and elect people and go out east. Love you tons and pray for each and every one of you. Praise to the man who speaks for our savior, with or without a black tag.

Why Missionaries get fat…..

Dear Mom, Dad, and everybody else on the email list,

Due to recent requests (mom), I’m going to be more detailed about my mission. I love the area, which used to be 2 separate areas, but they combined Goodland and Burlington to 1. Both are small, one always smells like weed because Burlington is in Colorado and weed is legal there.  We have a single Walmart between the two.

People are amazing, but they all work at inconvenient times for their salvation and we try hard to help them. Then we have people who have all these kids and don’t have time for us after 8:00, which makes sense.

My Goodland apartment is super small, has a bunch of broken stuff, and the bathroom has no doorknob. I fixed it by shoving a towel into the spot where it had originally been in, and use a doorstop for privacy.

We have met a bunch of crazy people. Percy is doing well, and his horrific images of prison are less invasive since he quit drinking alcohol. Anthony, the boy who I baptized, is super strong, and he’s helping us with his friends. A boy named Connor (age 9), who is the reincarnation of young me (which is bad), wants to get baptized, but his mom has this crazy idea that Connor won’t be held accountable for his mistakes, some notion about being more responsible.

I wish that’s how it worked, because then baptism would be unessential. But my Lord has proclaimed that no man can enter into the kingdom without being baptized. Burlington is funny. We have this less active family’s house, which has a couple of weed smokers who are super funny, and are interested. The apartment is super big there, but it has no water pressure in the kitchen sink and all water in it is messed up.

Got to set up a grill without any instructions, and got to have a Kansas barbecue, this made me feel super fat as I ate.

So, mom, I began to write you a poem for your birthday and Mother’s Day. Be prepared to have your socks blow off. Also, I have been trying to work out. I also had a tragic accident with my msf (missionary savings fund). I used my card to pay for a car wash and it stole most of my money for some reason. I had to survive off of my home card. I would like to get the telephone pin for my savings so I can be able to transfer funds into my account in case of an emergency. I can’t do it by myself, which sucks.

P days are super chill, a lot of naps, emails, prison cakes, magic games, football, soccer and basketball. We are planning to play with some of our investigators later today.

So, we have been working with the Breiningers and they are working towards baptism together, but I don’t know when. They are super stoked for it. Been helping a million people work towards baptisms, like Percy, Angel, big Anthony, Connor, Mahki, Maliki, Walter, the list is eternally getting longer with the elect on it. Just have to help them through their trials of faith.

I love all of you, but my Lord and Savior is my true ally and the best older brother I have, making it possible for me and my family to be able to be together in eternity with all the people who he saved through me. Obedience is the price for faith and faith is the power. Christ is the reason why I do this. He has changed my life and my attitude for the eternities.

Miracles from abroad and another Candland

So Tre has a cousin Hayden Candland who is serving a mission in England. This is a miracle that is to great not to share.

I want to share an amazing miracle that I found out about on Tuesday. So this miracle first sparked 21 months ago when I was being trained. So on my third Sunday in the mission field, my trainer Elder Ramsay and I got home from church, had lunch and then we decided to go do some park contacting in Avenham Park by the river Ribble.

We said a prayer before we left that we would be led to someone that needed the gospel and would accept it. Well on our walk through the park we stopped and talked to this man named Robert. He had a joint in his mouth and seemed pretty sad. He told us that his daughter was sick and dying and asked how here could be a God if this was happening. I was still pretty a pretty fresh greenie so I didn’t know really how to answer him but I felt prompted to share about how on my Dads mission his mother past away from Cancer and how it was really hard for him, but we share that families can be together forever. We talked to him about the plan of salvation and thought that he was going to become a new investigator for sure. Well the spirit was really strong and we were in tears, but he told us he was sorry but he likes his cannabis and other things and that he will leave it for now.

At the end of the day I remember talking with Elder Ramsay because it was a tough day and we were just trying to figure out what we did wrong and why we didn’t find someone that day.

Well now fast forward 21 months to last Tuesday.

So I get a call from my friend Elder Singsam who is serving in Southport and he tells me that he has an amazing miracle to share with me. He told me that this man came up to them that day and said “Hey it’s because of two missionaries like you that I am still alive today”. They were like “What do you mean?”

And he went on to explain how he was walking through Avenham Park one day and he was on his way to go and jump off a bridge and kill himself because his daughter was close to death and he was depressed, but two Mormon missionaries stopped and talked to him. One shared a story about his father and because of that he decided not to jump off of the bridge. He said that one of them was from Texas (he’s really from Colorado) and one had glasses. He asked if it was Elder Candland and Robert said “Yep that’s the one!”

Now Elder Singsam and his companion are teaching Robert, his girlfriend and his daughter!!!

It was an amazing miracle that made me realize that yes sometimes we get rejected and people don’t want to learn more, but no effort goes wasted. When we share our testimonies with others, it goes farther than we will ever realize. If you are reading this and feel that you are wasting your time with someone or something or a group of people, please know that you are doing a great job! God will magnify your efforts and they will not go wasted.

I just want to thank my Dad. If it wasn’t for this experience that he went through, I wouldn’t have been able to share it with Robert. Every trial can be a blessing and is there so that we can help other people.

Conference Weekend was SICK! in a good way….

Dear mom and dad,

This conference was the sickest ever. I’m still kinda mad though. While we were in the last session and Elder Holland came up to speak, I was so excited. He’s my favorite speaker. Then, it skipped to the end, making us miss his talk. I almost killed Elder Nix. Then we played monopoly with a recent convert. Also, priesthood session was intense; lot about marriage, being worthy for marriage and priesthood authority.

This week has been kinda depressing. A lot of people have been pushing us away, leaving, moving, or, in one case, slammed the door in our faces. I have been praying for God’s help in helping him to guide us and find people who need us.

Nick got called to Tennessee? Tell the fool to email me. Please?

Also, my companion got me addicted to freaking Magic the Gathering card game. We are super close now, but now I also want to blow all my money on cards. He keeps on kicking my butt.

Tell Reese to make sure his bike doesn’t have any flat tires. You probably remember what happened to me when I went. Take pictures and send them!

Send pictures of Jane’s games.

Also, I want to share how much I’ve grown on my mission. I feel like my freaking heart has been shattered and mended to be better than I could ever make it. I might not come home because I love Kansas so much. The savior sent me out here to help feed his sheep so they can have true joy in the fold of Christ. If you feel like you have strayed too far away or that Christ doesn’t want you or he doesn’t want more of his sheep in the fold, get over yourself and come unto him. He didn’t care then, when people were filthy with diseases that are almost eradicated today, killed people, committed sins in ways we find abhorred and Christ wanted them to come unto him. If you wait, you will never find happiness.

Also, I’m super excited to share. Percy, the guy who had a drinking problem, just quit. He got detoxed and was able to start not drinking. He’s been clean for about a week. Super proud of the guy. He wants to build a hot rod with his son, and he says that he can’t do it drunk as a bum. Dad, I want to do that with you. Buy an old car and fix it up with you when I get home. It’s a cool idea, but I get dibs on the car, since I need one when I get back.

I was also able to reestablish a connection with an old investigator. She was about to get baptized before a stupid Elder made her feel like she was being forced to do it. She says she doesn’t think she’s still going to be baptized LDS, but she’s still willing to listen. We’ll get Angel in the fount.

Hug Jane for me for praying for Percy. As soon as it is available, I am going to watch Elder Holland’s talk. And I’ll read Hayden’s letter.

Love, in the name of that all-powerful redeemer, Jesus Christ,
Elder Candland
